Days after our disapproval of the steel beams we decided to visit the sub-contractor that fabricated the steel. There was some confusion because the General Contractor took us to another workshop which was approved earlier. But the shock was still to come: there was not a single security, health or environmental precaution taken in this workshop. People working without the proper protection, no chemical storages and a chaotic workspace:

Welcome at the steelshop 01

For a project in Shanghai the General Contractor submitted the following steel beams for approval. I always thought that steel beams are cast / formed in one piece but the Chinese way is welding the steel beams from virtually every left over piece of metal they have. And without the proper tools for welding, cutting, drilling and transporting things get really messy:

Strong stuff . . . bamboo
